Epcot has had a renovation bringing a new land, Moana’s Journey of Water, to this futuristic park. Most of Disney’s amusement parks have been given new lands/rides and Epcot has been waiting for their turn. Even though it is not a ride, this attraction features many interactive water activities with a beautiful, uplifting trail that all ages have been excited to try. Throughout this trail, it also teaches the importance of water, while making it fun.
Located between Spaceship Earth and the Seas with Nemo & Friends, this attraction first opened to workers of Disney and their family, then shortly after on September 24th through the 29th and October 1 to the 4th, they released it for annual pass holders as a special perk. The attraction was finally available to the public on October 16th. Upon opening, it started with a virtual queue, then continuing with a standby queue. On the busier days, they will resort back to a virtual queue in an attempt to control the crowds.
The movie Moana was the story of an adventurous, wild teenager who had a strong desire to explore the sea. She sails out to the ocean despite her fathers protests to prove that she can save her people independently. It provides a profound impact on young girls that they can do what they want, while standing up for themselves. This movie also represents the culture of Hawaiians showing their strength and grace. The addition of this land to Epcot is very exciting, now that they are in the process of a newly discovered live-action film. This land will bring popularity to this film, and vice versa.
Considering they started working on Journey of Water in June 2021, they have made an incredible amount of progress in such a short amount of time. “When I found out about this new land, I definitely did not expect it to come so soon,” 8th grader Eva Ramos said. “I thought it would take way longer than two years since the area is huge, and they would have to find ways to make the water interactive.”
Te Feti’s 16 foot statue was introduced to Moana’s aquatic section. She represents life and natural harmony. She was added to the land, specifically known for playing a major role in Moana. Some are undecided on whether this will become the new, iconic symbol of Epcot, competing with Spaceship Earth.
Journey of Water is perfect for all ages. “Growing up, some kids might have felt left out with not having the ability to go on a specific ride but now with Journey of Water, it will benefit the younger kids,” said 9th grader Anna Gaspard. Despite this, a lot of fans are hesitant on the placement of this land. Many are curious as to why it was placed in Epcot. “I think it should’ve been added to Magic Kingdom, because Epcot includes more cultural stuff.” Said Gaspard. Some others have also believed it should’ve been added to Animal Kingdom since the Moana movie is focused on nature, rather than Epcot’s different pavilions.
