Welcome, Panthers, to our first episode of Panthers Playbook, a weekly update where sports and athletes will be recognized throughout the year. In today’s article, we will discuss last week’s sports updates.
Let’s start off with our Panther football team, who’s head coach is Chris Haire. Last week, our Panther football team played a game against Northeast for the Homecoming game with a successful win! They ended the game with a score of 17-6.
Next, our volleyball teams, starting with the JV team, which is very special and young. The team consists of 15 athletes, eight high schoolers, and seven middle schoolers. Coach Nixon Barrios continues to be the head coach of the school season for the third time. Coach Samantha Harwell contributes as his assistant coach. As the season continues, our JV team continues with a record of 13-2.
On Tuesday, October 1st, Our Lady Panthers had a match against Cypress Bay. They unfortunately lost in two sets (out of three). The first set was a challenge as they finished with a score of 12-25 (sets go up to 25 points but there must be a gap of two points to win). Our players then worked even harder as a team to end the second set with a tight score of 26-28, a well-fought loss. Eighth-grader Hailey McMillan was given the “Player of the Game” award.
This year our Volleyball Varsity team is very talented. Containing 15 players with four seniors this year. Coach Samantha Harwell continues to be the head coach of the school season for the sixth time for varsity. Coach Nixon Barrios helps out as an assistant coach and junior Aakash Arancherry assists as the team manager. As the season continues, our Lady Panthers now possess a 10-6 record.
On Tuesday, October 1st, Our Lady Panthers unfortunately lost their game against Cypress Bay in three sets, (out of five). The first set was lost in a score of 19-25, and the second in a score of 16-25. After two loss sets, our lady panthers worked their hardest and closed the gap of loss points, losing the set with a score of 20-25. A close and hard-working set.
Our top performers for this game are senior Jaide Keen with a hitting percentage of .571% and eight kills. Junior Samantha McMillan with 19 kills and a hitting percentage of .381%. Junior Mia Luersen with a total of three blocks and four kills.
Sophomore Kailey Michaelson was able to acquire a total amount of 17 digs. Sophomore, Olivia Greco helped her players by having a total of 18 assists. Samantha McMillan was gifted “Player of the Game”
With this, our lady panthers advance to play in the Big Eight on Tuesday, October 8th.
Now let’s talk about our Cross Country team, whose head coach is Brantley Barr and his assistant coaches are Ryan Pinney and Laura Maniscalco. This team contains about 42 players in both JV and Varsity teams, female and male combined.
On September 30, our XC team had a meeting, BCCA XC Week Five- Quiet Waters.
The boys ran in the 4925-meters race placing fourth out of seven teams. They had a total time of 1:39:27, an average time of 19:53, and a score of 77.
Congratulations to the following men runners: sophomore Lucas Werth for placing sixth with a total time of 18:58.2, eighth-grader Brandon Martinez, for placing tenth with a total score of 19:44.4, and eighth-grader Austin Steward, for placing 16th with a total time of 19:49.9.
Congratulations to the following women runners for running in the 4925-meters race: freshman Taylor Hartley, for placing seventh with a time of 24:16.3, senior Abby Foster, for placing 17th with a total time of 25:46.6, and freshman Hailey Lockwitz, for placing 29th with a total score of 27:33.1.
Lastly for this episode, on Tuesday, October 1st, our boys varsity golf team played against Douglas and St.Thomas. This game was unfortunately a loss. Douglas placed first with an overall shot of 136, St.Thomas placed second with an overall shot of 146, and we placed third with an overall shot of 182.
Congratulations to senior Brandon Moll who shot an overall of 47. Senior Floyd Harris shot an overall of 43. Sophomore Fabian Harris also shot an overall of 43.
