On Tuesday, October 1, the high school classes participated in decorating their hallways to be judged. This event is known as ‘Hallway Wars’, with the grades devoting much of their time and resources to fit the given theme. This year, classes were expected to accessorize their corridors fitting to a board game theme.
With the withdrawal of Curriculum Resource Teacher Kelly O’Neil as an SGA advisor, Math Teacher Ashley Speerin volunteered to take her place. This presented a conflict with her current position as the Class of 2026 Advisor, along with Curriculum Resource Teacher Hayley Pottruck. Speerin’s says her biggest motivation is the kids. She said, “I am really involved in everything going on in the school and I really like working with the students to put events together.” She has received positive feedback, though, with people viewing Speerin as an important asset to this school and that she will run student government to their greatest abilities.
To assist the juniors in their hallway, English Teacher Adrianna Martinez stepped up for the class. Pottruck feels that Martinez did an amazing job and really motivated the class. Martinez says, “The kids had some problems maintaining a positive attitude and making sure people were actually there, but it helped me to form a bond with the kids that I didn’t know before.” Despite these drawbacks, they still did a fantastic job securing themselves a first place win, beating the seniors.
Classes are also realizing that the effort required for hallway wars is too much for the low reward. Pottruck said, “Hallway wars is a great bonding experience, but the time, effort, and money for it is difficult to say that it’s worth it.” In turn, they’ve come up with a new idea that will be more practical. They would like to design floats that would be showcased and voted on at the Homecoming game. This allows for more people to see their creations, rather than just a few judges.
Some students strongly disagree with this opinion though. Junior Johan Morales, says, “It’s our last and final year, why are we going to stop now when we can just do it one last time?” Other students such as sophomore Brooke Patrick feel that hallway wars brings a lot of memories and helps to build spirit in a class.
This year, the juniors beat the seans by one point, marking the second time in a row. The ranking is as follows: Sophomores, Freshman, Seniors, Juniors. Freshman advisor Laura Bustamante said, “the kids were really excited and they worked very hard, so it was nice to see them so happy”. Overall, this year’s hallway wars was quite eventful and we will see next year if the classes continue to participate in this event.
