As the 2024 election ends, disputes about Amendment 4 not being passed in Florida are rising. Voting “yes” on Amendment 4 means that the decision for abortion will be returned, but voting “no” would mean that abortion would remain illegal after six weeks, with exceptions.
These exceptions include preventing the death of the pregnant woman and when the pregnant woman was raped/insulted. Other states can have more exceptions and some, none at all.
Millions of women in Florida have been causing riots ever since Roe v. Wade was overturned in June 2022. This ruling meant that there was no federal constitutional right to abortion.
The governor of Florida, Ron Desantis, was one of the people trying to stop Amendment 4 from happening. DeSantis held events to persuade Florida voters to vote “no” to Amendment 4. Before the election, he had an event in Jacksonville with doctors who opposed Amendment 4.” This is just not a healthy way to be able to conduct our affairs of state. The truth will set you free.” he said.
Even though the election is over and the Amendment wasn’t passed, there are still people in the state of Florida who have different opinions about the election. “I feel neutral about the amendment not passing because this is what the people of Florida voted for.” high school teacher Daniella Olivera said.
Some people feel differently about it. “I believe that women should have the choice to decide what they want to do with their bodies, no matter the time frame.” junior Sophia Llano stated. Multiple other people who were interviewed agreed with this statement.
“Honestly I think it’s not over with, I think that it’s something that is going to be continued to be talked about and continued in upcoming elections. I’m almost positive it’s going to come up in the 2028 election.” high school teacher Gianna Pappalardo said. This can raise the question if the riots and debates on this topic will ever end.
