With the rise of minimalistic architecture, family traditions are beginning to be impacted. Specifically, Christmas with many facing the big debate: How should we decorate? Should we stick to the classic, traditional Christmas look, or should we go for a more neutral and aesthetic approach?
When most people think of Christmas, they probably picture the same classic decorations that have been around forever. Traditional Christmas decor is all about cozy vibes, warm colors, and symbols that remind us of the holidays and even, for some, of Christmas when they were kids. Charlee Goldstein states, “classic Christmas decor makes it actually feel like it’s Christmas and not just a regular day. It also leaves the feeling of joy and warmth.”
Think of a big Christmas tree covered in twinkling lights, tinsel, and ornaments. Or stockings hung up by the fireplace, wreaths on the door, and garlands draped across the house. The colors red, green, gold, and silver are the staples, and the star or angel at the top of the tree. Although some of this is considered “tacky,” for many, these decorations are what make Christmas feel like Christmas.
Every year more homes on Christmas are starting to look less colorful and are being decorated with more neutral tones like beige and white. People who choose to decorate neutrally are mostly going for the aesthetic of the look, as having colors like beige can make a home seem more chic and modern. Decor can be shown through natural elements such as pinecones or wood, which are often used to create a rustic Christmas aesthetic. People tend to stay away from the beige because it leaves them feeling empty and disappointed because it looks so plain and low effort. Alejandra Gil Restrepo agrees with the large majority of people’s thoughts on neutral Christmas, stating, “I prefer a colorful Christmas because it brings more joy, unlike neutral Christmas, which is just boring.”
The ongoing debate between traditional and minimalistic Christmas decorations highlights a change in family traditions, with many feeling that classic decorations bring more joy and warmth compared to the neutral aesthetic. Each family has their own perspective on what Christmas is and the decorations are up to you!
