As the track season approaches, young athletes are preparing their body and mind for exhausting meets and practices. Sprinters, long-distance runners, hurdlers, and competitors in field sports like shot put and long jump are all getting ready. On the first day of conditioning coach Maniscalco said, “I hate to be the grim reaper but if you show no effort and just want to mess around you're going to get cut”. The coaches are fed up with kids who are unreliable and think they're joining track to only have fun with their friends.
Student athletes are increasing their endurance, strength, and speed through a mix of drills and workouts. Sprinters and throwers work together on a variety of training drills, including sets of 400 meters, 200 meters, and other specific exercises to enhance their speed and agility. Meanwhile, long distance runners focus on building endurance with continuous running, typically lasting 45 minutes or more, to develop stamina.
Athletes engage in long stretching sessions together at the start of practice to enhance flexibility, prevent injuries, and maintain an optimal range of motion for peak performance. The coaches are closely monitoring progress, making sure they find hard working and dedicated people.
Over the years, Charter has had standout athletes who have made a significant impact in track and field. Senior Adrianna Harris, had an outstanding performance last year, competing in both shot put and discus at the state championship. She’s expected to return this season, continuing to build on her impressive track record. Senior Trinity Dorvil, is another standout athlete who is expected to qualify for states as well for shot put and discus. Eigth-grader Kendall Parrott, is working in the 2-mile race. This will be her first opportunity to compete at the state level in track as she went to states for cross country earlier this year.
Coach Virgin, Barr, Pinney, Maniscalco, Speerin, Wendell, and Brann are the high school coaches, while Coach Savath, Burke, and Pizzaioli serve as the middle school coaches. In previous years, there was a shortage of coaches, but it’s clear this year that there is plenty. This year, the coaches are looking for a smaller, more dedicated team. They want athletes who are willing to work hard and put in the effort. They also want athletes who are willing to participate in all aspects of practice, not just their own events. Coach Barr said it best: "You're here to be an athlete."
