With the current events happening in our nation, the question has been posed: Does our government truly care about the populous anymore? Day in and day out, the safety of Americans have been risked, and people are refusing to sit and watch their nation unfold.
It all began with the Tik Tok ban, a bipartisan bill signed by President Joe Biden on April 24, 2024. This bill is forcing TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to divest from U.S. operations or face a nationwide ban, which caused a lot of commotion in the nation. Many politicians argued that they cared about the safety and security of the country’s people, but users of the app, especially Gen-Z, have fought back, saying if they truly cared, they would ban apps with a previous history of leaked data, such as Instagram and X (formerly Twitter). Sophomore Peyton Moser, for example, says, “Tiktok is not only an app used for entertainment; it is also used as an education platform. Whereas other apps like facebook are used only for things like posting pictures ” Showcasing that some people at our school don’t find the app to be as threatening as the United States Government makes it seem.
Then earlier this month, Donald Trump mentioned in a news conference that during his presidency he plans to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America,” absolutely stunning people and leaving them in shock. On Monday; January 20, 2024; Trump said, “A short time from now, we are going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.” Some argue that this is a strategic decision, as the oil in the Gulf would be extremely useful and beneficial towards United States resources, but other’s find the concept completely useless.
Bill H.R.734, proposed by Representative Gregory Steube, “prohibits school athletic programs from allowing individuals whose biological sex at birth was male to participate in programs that are for women or girls,” essentially preventing transgender women from participating in a woman’s sport. This bill faces massive backlash as issues about equality and safety still are present, but the United States Congress is focused on what gender can play what sport.
People are demanding that the government pay attention to genuine issues, such as gun laws and public safety, as they feel the government is ignoring the country’s sufferings. Politicians everywhere around the nation are making promises to citizens and ensuring certain policies will be implemented, but once elected, very few follow through and the citizens have had enough.
This lack of populous care though, is not centered around the Republicans or Democrats of our country, both parties are guilty. It is simply a lack of attention to issues that genuinely concern Americans, and so people wonder, when will our government truly protect us?
