As of late, Floridians have taken notice of the snow they are getting in northern Florida. The people who once called Florida “the sunshine state” are now putting on layers of clothes to fight this unexpected winter wonderland. This event has started to make people speculate how bad climate change has gotten.
This isn’t the first time it has snowed in Florida; in fact, it has snowed more than 80 times. However, this year's snow has broken 1954's record of 4 inches. This year, north Florida has recorded 10 inches of snow.
Even though Florida has faced multiple life-changing hurricanes and storms, it never witnessed a snow problem. “This cold front has been annoying; walking to school every morning makes my finger numb!” said sophomore Brooke Patrick. All of these bizarre events are the consequences of climate change.
There are also people who wished that it snowed in south Florida. “I kinda wish it snowed down here because I just think it’ll be nice to have a snow day!” sophomore Elise McDonald stated. Her and other people really wanted snow to be down in south Florida, but maybe it’s good that it didn’t.
If south Florida did get snow, it would’ve caused some major issues, making people question climate change and how it’s being handled. The only time it’s ever snowed in south Florida was in 1977 in Miami. It wasn’t heavy, but if it was it would’ve caused issues. For example, the roads and bridges in Florida weren’t made so cars can safely drive in snow. It’ll also just cause a lot of environmental impacts on the food and life in Florida.
Climate change has spread to Florida, and it's not just snow. Florida has been getting nasty heat waves. “I think that we as a community need to come together and do something, or at least say something about climate change, " sophomore Sydney Leath stated. If no one tries to stop a problem, the problem will never be solved, and Florida, as well as other states, will keep on suffering the consequences of climate change.
