The Coral Springs Fire Explorer Program invites youth interested in pursuing a career in fire rescue to explore the profession through hands-on training and guidance. Designed to inspire and engage the next generation of first responders, the program provides explorers a firsthand look at the dedication that is required to serve their community.
Young explorers take on the responsibility of continuing the legacy of service to their community. Orderly tradition is held at a high regard at this institution and students are expected to be vigilant and determined. “It is a unique program, offering vital experiences to those involved and it’s what I’ve been doing for the last 25 years,” Chief Mike Moser said.
For explorers like Peyton Moser, the call to serve runs in the family. “My mom and dad are both firefighters, and I really wanted to follow in their footsteps,” said Moser. “I want to be just like them when I’m older.” Personal inspiration fuels his passion every day, yet the journey is not without its challenges. “The most challenging part is definitely the strength and agility that it takes.”
The program focuses on physical strength and mental determination, stressing that one cannot exist without the other. Participants undergo intense exercises on the daily to strengthen their mental and physical being. “We push ourselves more and more every day to grow stronger,” said Michael Palazzo. The rigorous schedule is designed to challenge both the body and the mind, encouraging participants to break through personal limits.
Resilience is garnered through partaking in high-pressure simulations, such as mock rescue scenarios, to test their ability to persevere under stress-inducing conditions. These experiences teach them how to quickly adapt, not only for their firefighting career, but for any challenge they may face in life. “You have to stay calm and focused, no matter what,” Logan Bosworth said. These practice situations leave the explorers stronger and more capable to answer real calls when the time comes.
Emphasis is placed on the building of connections through active teamwork. Explorers are expected to work efficiently with their fellow peers to complete tasks. Preparing them for the real world, explorers work in assigned groups to collaborate and solve issues. Morgan Patrick, an experienced explorer, feels the program challenged her communication skills. “But it brings us all together as we bond over our struggles,” said Patrick. This bond fosters connections that will span beyond the confines of the Fire Department.
The academy focuses on leadership development through mentorship. Experienced firefighters work closely with the emerging explorers, guiding them through the profession and offering valuable insights. These mentors share their firsthand experiences, providing a realistic perspective on what it truly means to be a firefighter. “It feels so special to pass on my knowledge, and I feel the impact everyday,” said Brayden Gardener, a senior mentor. Learning how to navigate the tumultuous relationship between the rewards of saving lives and the challenges of a physically and mentally demanding career.
Through every drill and every shared moment, the program instills a lasting message: follow your dreams. “I would definitely tell them to follow their dreams,” said Jason Matthews, “and if this is something that they really want to do, put your mind to it and don’t give up.” The Coral Springs Fire Station forges a path for young explorers to ignite their passion and carry on the tradition of service for generations to come.
