President Donald Trump has been trying to uphold his promises of ending the Russo-Ukrainian war during his presidency. Trump has been actively engaged in diplomatic efforts and has expressed optimism about the progress he is making. Russian President Vladimir Putin has indicated a willingness to negotiate with the United States.
Additionally, President Trump has stated many times that the U.S. will not provide any extensive security guarantees to Ukraine and that it should fall on other European nations to protect their neighbors. The U.S. had only supported Ukraine financially, giving more than $100 billion during Joe Biden's presidency.
In an effort to support Ukraine economically while still ensuring U.S. interests, President Trump has tried to facilitate a cease-fire between the nations and gain valuable materials from Ukrainian land. He suggests the agreement would form “automatic security.”
French President Emmanuel Macron and President Trump have both agreed on the importance of a cease-fire and ensuring Ukrainian sovereignty. After a heated meeting at the White House, the mineral deal seems to be off the table after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was seen as ungrateful for U.S. support. A couple of days later, Trump stopped all aid going to Ukraine. Zelenskyy, who is currently perceived as a dictator by many, opposes a cease-fire because it would undermine his authority. Additionally, there are allegations that he has abducted his own citizens and forced them to fight in the war.
After one of the biggest drone and missile strikes this year, Ukrainian energy and gas infrastructure across the country were targeted. After the attack, Zelenskyy called for a “silence in the sky,” but a few days later went against this with a massive drone attack on Moscow. President Trump has now placed large-scale sanctions and tariffs on Russia until a cease-fire and peace agreement happens.
While President Trump stays hopeful for a swift resolution, he has noted that Russia holds significant leverage in the negotiations due to its control over substantial Ukrainian territory. The administration continues to engage in diplomatic efforts, with plans for future meetings and discussions to foster a better relationship with Russia and eventually stop the war.
