The highly anticipated Minecraft movie has finally hit theaters, and the question on everyone’s mind is: does it capture the magic of the beloved game, or does it not do it justice?
Directed by Jared Hess, “A Minecraft Movie” takes a different approach than many might expect. Instead of following a storyline from the game, it forms an entirely new one about real life people entering the game.
The movie is one of those where it’s so bad that its good. The part where Jack Black, who plays Steve, says “Chicken Jockey” became the biggest joke of the year all over the internet. People yell out the phrase while watching the movie in theaters. However, the Popcorn throwing that is also involved does make the movie theater employees’ lives harder.
It is, however, a nice tribute to Minecraft players/watchers. The movie paid tribute to a former streamer, Techno Blade, who passed away in 2022. They added a pig with a crown into the movie, which was his signature character skin. This made people very happy to see since many watched his streams daily.
The addition of the songs in the movie has mixed opinions. I believe it was a great move. The catchy song “Steves Lava Chicken” was so catchy and so random that it even hit the billboards in the UK. It even had people trying to recreate the fake Lava Chicken shown in the scene. Videos on TikTok garnered hundreds of thousands of views with their attempts at the recreation.
Lots of people have strong negative opinions when it comes to this movie. They don’t think something so bad should have so many people watching it. One reporter from DailyLobo.com said “this is maybe the most trope-riddled, derivative mess of a film I’ve ever had to sit through.”.
While I can see how some may not understand this movie, it’s really an acquired taste that only some understand. And those who understand are exactly the target audience the movie was made for, people who have a history with the game and know how to have some fun.
