On April 21st, 2025, the Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Marty Makary and secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy, announced that they are planning on banning artificial food dyes.
“There was no ban,” dietician Dr. Jessica Knurick said. In her videos on instagram, she explains that the food dye isn’t the only reason that food with the artificial dye is bad for people. “Artificial food dyes are used because they have a better consistency. You don’t need to use as much if them because they’re so potent, and they are generally cheaper.” Dr. Knurick said.
When asked about how they feel about the ban on artificial food dye, students at Coral Springs Charter had mixed emotions. “I think that banning food dye will make a lot of food products look kind of boring, but I can understand why they would ban it.” sophomore Tanvi Yadav said. “I haven’t had any bad experiences bad with food that has food dye in it,” said Yadav.
Others, however, have different feelings about the ban. “Artificial food dye could be a big reason behind people getting sick. Think about Takis, there were people getting allergic reactions because of the dye.” sophomore Brooke Patrick said.
This ban on artificial dyes could make food that is known to be popular because of the bright colors, lose its popularity. Brands like Skittles would need to change their whole brand since they rely on those bright artificial colors. Others like, Air Heads and M&M’s will also be in danger of losing their popularity.
“There’s no point of buying my favorite candy anymore if this ban spreads because it just won’t feel the same.” sophomore Elise McDonald said.
