On Monday, April 21, CSCS proudly hosted its annual Student-Athlete Signing Day in the gym, honoring 15 senior athletes who have committed to universities further continuing their athletic careers at a college level.
This tradition continues to highlight these students and their strength in the athletic program. Some of these students have prepared their whole life's for this. This day honors the achievement of the student athletes while looking ahead into their futures.
Multiple student athletes and their family, teammates, and friends gathered to support them. Even though this event only lasted for a period of time due to it being held during school hours it was very special. Different athletes like, softball, volleyball, baseball, basketball, soccer and ect.. They all joined together as a family to celebrate each other's success.
Some first hand experience in this event was Sophia Bertorelli. Sophia is a senior who has played softball since she was young. Her older sister was her inspiration to play the sport since she wanted to spend time with her. She fell in love with the sport and decided that she wanted to make softball her thing. Twelve colleges wanted her to sign with them but she ended up choosing Boston college. Sophia chose this particular one because their academics are good, loves the team environment and culture they already have established. Sophia Bertorelli says, “My most memorable moment in softball was playing on the national team for Columbia with my sister and winning second place in the olympic qualifier, my emotions were so mixed since we were so close to making it but at the end of the day i tried my best and had so much fun which is what counts.” She does see herself becoming a professional athlete but also wants to focus on her academics in law school.
Mason Alexander, a senior, who plays baseball. This started as a simple after school hobbie when he was a kid but stuck onto him. He continued playing this sport because he had so much fun and could forget everything when he plays. Mason soon realised he was good at baseball and could potentially continue it in his future. Five schools wanted him to sign with them but he commited to Palm Beach State college. He signed to this college because it's closer to home and a lot of his friends are going to be on his team. His most memorable moment was his home run against Archbishop High School. Mason Alexander says, “ I'm excited to finally leave and start a new chapter in my life not only playing the sport I enjoy but to academically grow as well.” He will not be continuing baseball professionally but instead working on his masters and becoming an electrician.
Camden Fearon, a senior, who plays basketball. He started playing because he saw his brother playing basketball in highschool. This grew onto Camden since he wanted to play with his brother and he fell in love with basketball. He continued to pursue basketball in college since neither of his brothers continued the sport, he wanted to be the first in his family to take basketball to the next level. Three colleges wanted him to sign with them but he commited to Riverland Community College. He chose this because they have a great program to start his career. Camden Fearon says, “My most memorable moment was sophomore year because I got to play with my brother on his senior night, and I also enjoyed every pregame moment.” He can definitely see himself playing basketball professionally but regardless of what happens he just wants to have fun and do what he loves
This annual Student-Athlete Signing Day honored 15 seniors committing to college athletics. The event celebrated their hard work and the support of their families and friends. The athletes had many memorable moments and have future aspirations, both in sports and academics. Whether they continue to play their sport or focus on academics these seniors have amazing bright futures ahead of them.
