Opinion: Online learning increases stress on students

During this pandemic and the start of the new 2020-2021 school year, students have
been stressing about turning in assignments on time and keeping up with everything. Online
learning is bad for students because there are too many distractions and it’s causing stress to
those who shouldn’t experience stress at such a young age. On social media there’s constantly
students my age talking and posting about how much work they have due and how they can’t
keep up with all of it. “How am I supposed to finish all these assignments in one day I’m so
stressed with all this work,” said Sophomore Mckenna Derosa. I’m sure I’m not the only one
who agrees and relates to this.
Students mostly stress about time. Managing time is not easy at home. “Actual school
learning is way easier because of bells and something there to manage time for us, in online
class sometimes we want a little break and go on our phones and completely lose track of time,”
said Freshman Savannah Lebreton. I very much agree with this, every time I’m in an online class I
tend to check my phone and slowly start using it more and more causing me to ignore the class
and everything else. In school we know that every time after class we go to our lockers maybe
talk to our friends for a little and go to our next class before the next bell, it’s all much better
and organized.
In school there are no phones available to students whatsoever, in fact they get in
trouble if they have their phones out in the hallway. At home they have complete access to go
on their phone, complete access to switch to another tab and completely ignore and forget
about the class. You might think it’s the students’ fault but it’s easy to get distracted and reach
over for their phone.
Students also worry about their space. It is mandatory to have no distractions or people entering the room or space they’re doing online school in. “I’ve been yelling at my mom for making too much noise and coming in my room while I’m in class. I don’t want my teacher to see me talking to someone else or my mom in the background of my video,” said Freshman Cole Wilson. We as students worry about things we shouldn’t worry about.
In the end, it’s our house, and teachers should understand that it’s not going to be as quiet as school. They should understand that this is hard for all of us, the students and the teachers. They should be patient with us and not give us that many assignments because their class isn’t the only class we have to worry about. All of this is very stressful, and many students can’t keep up with it
