Computers are able to talk to us and provide us information we ask for. Why are we actively shunning it?

In today’s world, we have numerous technologies at our disposal, with AI being one of them. Currently, when AI is mentioned, many think about the world being taken over, something super complex that we don’t need or something that is easily abused and will ruin original works by people. The latter is most common, and a valid worry. Whilst it’s very easy to abuse, we shouldn’t think about AI like that. AI is a very useful tool, trained on years of data and designed to assist us. We should be using it to help us instead of actively campaigning against it, and here’s why.

One of the main reasons why AI is so commonly looked down upon is because of how many people use it to cheat. The original intention for AI was to create a language model that can communicate coherently with people and answer questions, generating text and conversing about (almost) anything. Whilst AI is great at this, it’s very easy to notice when GPT is being used because it tends to eventually spew out random data and eventually go in a circle. It’s very obvious to anyone experienced in the content it’s writing about. For teachers that are worried about their students using AI, ask AI a few questions related to your content. You’ll see how the answers have a distinct writing style, and it’s very noticeable. AI is also good at study material. Ask it a couple questions about a topic to help study for a test; it’ll generate an outline and a list of things to study. You can even have it ask you a question and you can answer it.

Whilst it is possible for students to easily cheat on an AI, it’s much more efficient to help students properly embrace it, rather than try to prevent students from abusing it. GPT is great at helping generate questions, giving you general background knowledge and being discursive. If we use AI for idea-generating purposes instead of content-generating purposes, it wouldn’t be classified as plagiarism and cheating. Whilst some would follow this ideology, there’ll be some who will decide to have their essays, assignments, and other works generated by AI; however there are numerous (but somewhat questionable) tools used to detect AI, such as ZeroGPT. If you suspect someone used AI to generate an entire text, you can easily copy-paste the text into ZeroGPT’s AI detector and it will tell you if it’s AI generated or not.

Overall, GPT should be used for assistance, not content generation. Currently, AI has a negative reputation for this. When the word “AI” is heard, many immediately shut down the topic and reject it. Learning to embrace AI is important in today’s world because it’s not going anywhere. We now have computers that can talk to us, what’s next? Will pigs fly? Will Hell freeze over?
