On Friday, December 5th, Charter’s AP Art students got an immersive look into the contemporary art world beyond classrooms at Art Basel Miami Beach. The field trip was designed to expose students to professional artwork, global artists, and creative careers in the arts.
Held annually at the Miami Beach Convention Center, Art Basel brings together hundreds of galleries from around the world, showcasing paintings, sculptures, photography, digital media, and large scale installations. Each exhibit presented a different artistic perspective, encouraging students to think about technique, meaning, and presentation.
Several pieces stood out to students due to their interactive and unusual nature. “There were the robot dogs where they would put faces of famous people on a robot dog,” said Art Club President Jamie Ramlogan.
Ramlogan went on to explain other interactive works that caught the students’ attention, including a gold statue that responded to audience interaction and artwork that combined mixed materials and lighting, highlighting how modern artists experiment with both technology and physical space.
The field trip also allowed students to view artwork spanning different time periods, from historic pieces, to contemporary works created in recent years. “They have old masters like Picasso, Keith Harings, Warhols, that you can walk right up to.” said AP Art teacher Ms. Lindsay. “But then they also have art that's like, right now in 2025. You never know what you’re gonna see.”
“There’s 2D art, 3D art, and it’s huge. You can’t even get through all of it in the four hours that we’re there,” Lindsay said. The wide range of artwork allowed students to experience many different artistic styles and forms within a single visit.
For many AP Art students, the trip served as a source of inspiration as they continue developing their portfolios. Seeing professional artwork up close helped students gain new perspectives on creativity, materials, and artistic expression beyond the classroom.
