On Wed., Apr. 29, the Teen Political Forum took place at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts. The forum is an open mic style forum for high school students to raise questions and converse with state, county, and local elected officials about issues that are important to them.
The panel consisted of Coral Springs Mayor Scott J. Brook, Coral Springs City Commissioner Shawn Cerra, Coral Springs City Commissioner Joshua Simmons, Broward County Commissioner Michael Udine, Broward County School Board Chair Debra Hixon, Regional Superintendent of Teaching and Learning Dr. Jermaine Fleming, and Broward County Supervisor of Elections Joe Scott.
Students from Coral Springs Charter, Coral Glades High School, Coral Springs High School and Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School participated by sharing what’s on their minds. The discussions talked about important topics such as bullying, school protocols, mental health and ways to improve the school.
By hosting this event, the students and officials were able to engage in a meaningful conversation. It gave students an opportunity to hold the people who make these decisions, understand the challenges and experiences of the youth accountable.
At the end of the forum, schools would earn a prize based on the students attending. Coral Glades High School received first place and won a prize of $2000.00. Next Coral Springs Charter School earned second place with $1500.00. Lastly, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School took third place with $750.00.
The forum proved that when students are able to advocate for themselves, they become an important part on how to build a better future for the schools and the community of Coral Springs.
