Popular curly haircare brands including Living Proof, Shea Moisture, Garnier Fructis, and EvaNYC are used on TikTok in the new trend of curly hair routines.

Lately, there’s been debates on whether someone truly has curly hair or not. The “curl police” as they call it, has been hunting down anyone who even dares to say the word “curly.”
There have been multiple instances online where people debate on someone’s hair type. Someone in a video may say they have coily hair. Which sparks an absolute outrage and long debate in the comment section about that person’s hair type. “Your hair is actually straight,” They say. While others counter them, saying, “Their hair is curly.”
Hair cannot be categorized in just one broad category. Hair types are categorized by multiple specific categories. Not everyone has the same hair type.
Your hair can range from 1A hair to 4C hair. There are different levels/numbers that indicate your hair type. Type 1 is pin straight hair, type 2 is wavy hair, type 3 is curly hair, and type 4 is coily hair. The letters next to the numbers in the chart represent the width of the curl. Letter A represents the widest, B is medium curls, and C is small and circular.
You can also have a wide range of hair types, meaning one person’s hair can be a mix of 2B, 2C, and 3A and that is normal.
There has been a recent trend where people will try other people’s curl routines, only for people to say, “You literally have straight or wavy hair.” But hair types can vary day-to-day, and it’s impossible to see that through a screen. One day, your hair will be curly, and the next, wavy, and the next day curly with straight at the bottom.
Hair type has nothing to do with race either. While certain hair types may be more common for certain groups of people, it doesn’t mean that nobody else can have that hair type.
Overall, it’s very difficult to tell someone’s hair type without seeing how they style it, dry it, and how long it lasts. Hair types vary from person-to-person, and day-to-day, and no matter what type of hair you have, the “curl police” will disagree.
