On Dec. 21, rapper and songwriter Nicki Minaj attended Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest, centered around influencers and politicians supporting the MAGA movement.
Known for her extensive rap career starting in the late 2000’s, Minaj has been well known not only for her rhymes and hit songs like “Super Bass”, but also for her support of the LGBTQ+ community. However, as of recent, Minaj has found herself facing backlash from her fanbase following her public support of President Trump.
Hosted by Erika Kirk, wife of former Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk and now leader, AmericaFest featured an appearance by Minaj in a Question and Answer (Q&A) segment. This would be where Minaj would call President Trump “dashing” and “handsome”, further proving her support of the politician.
Following this event, her fanbase would express their differing opinions on her recent conversation with Kirk. After years of denouncing the president and expressing her support of the LGBTQ+ community, this came as a shock to many long-time fans. “I was not expecting her to come out as a right-winged conservative at all,” sophomore Alexander Hanner said. “Especially after her continued open support of the LGBTQ+ [community] and everything that MAGA is against.”
Others are not so appalled by Minaj’s political views, believing that she should not be punished or judged for her beliefs. “Everyone is entitled to their own opinion,” said junior Enrique Mattos. “I think we should respect what everyone thinks and how they feel about politics.”
Minaj’s recent support of the Republican Party has led to thousands of loyal fans rethinking their support of their favorite artist. Many who disagree are finding it difficult so separate art from the artist, while others believe that she is entitled to her own opinions and should be free to express her views.
