Formula one is known as the pinnacle of motorsport. The grid consists of eleven teams and only twenty-two drivers. These drivers race at speeds over 200mph almost every weekend, fighting for the world drivers championship and their teams fight for the constructors championship. 2026 marks the start of a new regulation period, the most drastic regulation change in Formula 1 history.
The first round, Australia, took place from March 6th to March 8th. The second round, China, started on March 13th and ended on March 15th. The third round, Japan, was from March 27th to March 29th. After the first three rounds, Mercedes is leading in the drivers and constructors championship. Fans believe that the title fight will be between George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
The Japanese Grand prix, held at the Suzuka circuit, is one of the most anticipated races of the calendar. Year after year, the circuit doesn’t fail to produce huge crowds and breathtaking races. In 2026, the race also played an integral role in allowing the teams to adapt to the new regulations.
The largest change in the new regulation period is the power units. Formula 1 one is moving towards sustainable engines, increasing electrical output and reducing traditional internal combustion. There is a 50/50 power split between the combustion engine and a 350kW electrical motor. Drivers now have to manage battery deployment and regeneration.
Another significant change is the aerodynamics. The 2026 cars are designed to reduce dirty air, allowing more wheel-to-wheel racing and overtaking opportunities. The Drag Reduction System (DRS) was replaced with “Overtake mode,” providing drivers with a boost of electrical energy when they are within one second of the car ahead. Adding on, the cars this year are 30kg lighter and have a 200mm shorter wheelbase.
Over the course of the 2026 season, the teams and drivers will continue to learn about the new regulations. While Mercedes is leading the championship, a lot can change at the next race in Miami. The Japanese grand prix gave us a real taste of this new era.
