The school's color guard team consists of 13 members, each dedicating their skills and passions to creating powerful performances in order to bring school spirit. Despite their contributions to the school, not much about the team is known.
Color guard is currently in their winter guard season. On Saturday, March 7, they took first place in their competition at Hialeah Gardens High School, showcasing their hard work. Yet, beyond their time in color guard, the members are also engaged in various other pursuits.
It is senior Manahil Khalil's fourth year doing color guard. "It truly has been an experience that has shaped my high school career," Khalil says. However, she is also committed to other interests. She is a member of debate and the environmental club, and is also involved in the school's SNHS. "Color guard takes up a lot of my time so its hard to really have a lot of hobbies that I can keep up with," senior Khlalil says. But when she has time for herself, you can find her making art and baking.
"I actually joined color guard by accident," senior Sophia Boccard says. "It was really funny because I ended up loving this sport anyway." Since then she has been committed, doing marching season for three years and two years of winter season. She also plays soccer for Coral Springs Youth Soccer, specifically being their goalie.
Junior Madison Kuritz has been doing color guard since middle school, making this season her fifth. She is the co-captain alongside sophomore Nicolle Urrea. When she had first joined, she was the youngest on the team. "It was around the end of my sixth grade year, in band class, when my band teacher [it wasn't band director David Cardona at the time] introduced color guard to the class," Kuritz says. "I went to the interest meeting hosted by Ms. Ysern and really ended up enjoying myself." Madison Kuritz has always been engaged in many extracurriculars. She participates in theater, dance, band, writing, fashion, etc. She is vice president of drama club and does tech during color guard season and acts in the musical when there is not. Junior Madison Kuritz has always been open to new things, first spontaneously joining color guard, and now newly joining dance this year.
It’s junior Gianna Ince's third year doing color guard. Her love for dance made her join the color guard in the first place. She is in art club and interact, combining the two by using her art skills to make the sign for interact club. She plans to run for co-captain for color guard next year.
Junior Tatianna Ghering dedicates her time fully to color guard. She has been doing it for three years. When she first started color guard she participated in clubs like HOSA and interact. However, she decided to no longer pursue these clubs and to solely focus on color guard.
Sophomore Nicolle Urrea has been doing color guard since she was a freshman. Although her time on the team is short, she had quickly grown to improve and became co-captain with Kuritz. She is in many extracurriculars like NHS, SGA, chorus, etc. She is a committed theater kid, even playing as one of the wickersham brothers in this year's Seussical The Musical.
It is sophomore Katelynn Lubinger's first year doing color guard. She does marching band, band, and theater. She has been doing both marching band and band for six years, and theater for four years. During her time in these clubs, she became fundraising manager for the marching band and the treasurer for Tri-M.
With the persuasion from her cousin, Khalil, freshman Alishba Arif decided to join colorguard. This year was her first year doing colorguard. Outside of colorguard she spends her time painting.
The members of colorguard are not only talented performers but also accomplished individuals in many other aspects. They’re committed to color guard and other fields too despite the time consuming nature of the sport. Even then, they make sure to prioritize their passion for color guard.
