Recently there has been a dramatic rise in the amount of non school issued devices brought to class, to replace their school issued ipads. Many students prefer to use their personal computers or laptops for a plethora of reasons. However, this brings up a possible problem of distractions in the class room. In this article we will go over students' opinions on whether personal computers in class is something that should be allowed and accepted, or whether it is a step in the wrong direction.
“I believe that bringing my personal computer to school allows me to have a lot more options when it comes to my education. On the school Ipads many websites are blocked, including news websites or educational sites. This limits my options during my research for an assignment or when I want to learn more about a topic. With my own computer, this problem is solved and I am able to get the maximum usefulness of the internet when I am learning.” said junior Brandon Ward. This highlights one of the many useful characteristics that person devices contain compared to school issued devices
“In my opinion, personal devices are just a distraction in classrooms. Without any limitations on the computers, students are tempted to do other things other than school work. This is exactly why the school iPads have websites blocked on them, and it will only get worse if students are allowed to bring their own personal laptops or computers to school.” said senior Tanish Tahkar. This can cause a big problem as distraction is in many cases a leading cause for grades to slip.
“They should not bring personal devices to school as kids would take it as an opportunity to play games.” said junior Shane Borbet. This is already a large problem with the school issued iPads and can become a real threat to the classroom environment if the students are allowed personal laptops or computers.
All in all there are students are mixed when it comes to whether or not bringing personal devices to school should be permitted or not. Although there are many positives and opportunities that can be gained from bringing a personal device to school, it can also be a catalyst for temptations to get the best of you and for students to get distracted. Over time with students bringing laptops and ipads from home to school, the truth will be clear of whether personal devices belong in a school environment or if it will be an hindrance.
