This year’s Met Gala looks turned some heads. Many celebrities were dressed in gorgeous gowns or polished suits, and some wearing…a horse?! The theme of the 2021 Met Gala is “In American: A Lexicon of Fashion” or simply American fashion. Many celebrities understood the assignment, with some channeling American icons like Marilyn Monroe. Other looks were not red carpet approved and left people questioning.

Many celebrities stole the show this year, one of them being Lili Reinhart. The actress showed up dressed in a beautiful pink gown with a long train covered with bright-colored flowers. The gown was crafted by Christian Siriano and the flowers on the dress represent each of the 50 states national flowers. “I’m wearing a garden!” she joked with social media star Emma Chamberlain.

One of the night’s co-chairs, Billie Eilish, became one of the most iconic looks of the night. She wore a glamorous peach gown with a massive train. Wearing Oscar de la Renta, Billie payed homage to Marilyn Monroe and classic Hollywood fashion. Eilish said that her outfit was inspired by her one of her childhood toys, the Holiday Barbie. “It was my favorite thing in the world.” She later explained her gratitude for having the opportunity to walk the red carpet wearing such a beautiful gown.

These ladies definitely stole the show at the Met. However, some celebrities’ looks were lacking that “wow” factor other celebrities had. Justin and Hailey Bieber are some of them. The couple dressed in very simple, black attire. Hailey wore Saint Laurent and Justin in “La Maison Drew,” his new clothing brand. Their looks were basic and do not compare to others Met Gala looks. Hailey described her look as “timeless American beauty” and was inspired by the late Hollywood actress, Grace Kelly. Many would’ve hoped to see them wearing something much more out-of-the box, since Justin is very well known for his unique fashion choices.

Another look that was unimpressive was TikTok star Addison Rae’s dress. She made her Met Gala debut wearing a red vintage Tom Ford gown. Addison also traded in her long brown balayage for a platinum blonde bob. Her look was criticized for looking very similar to her BFF Kourtney Kardashian’s 2019 Christmas dress. One user wrote “Not you wearing Kourtney’s Christmas dress to the Met Gala.” Multiple people called her outfit ‘plain’ and ‘basic’ and “looks like she got it off of Shein.” Addison’s dress was very beautiful, but it wasn’t worthy for the Met.

Most designers kept their outfits simple and elegant. However, some designers took another approach to American fashion. Reality TV star Kim Kardashian and singer Kim Petras all took the ‘W’ for the Met’s strangest looks this year. Their looks had many peoples’ heads turning and questioning why they chose these unique concepts.

Kim Kardashian is a regular at the Met Gala, looking stunning every year. However, this year she appeared on the red carpet in an outfit very different then her usual Met Gala attire. Kim was dressed in a black, conservative Balenciaga gown with her whole body, including her face, covered. She was accompanied by Balenciaga designer Demna Gvasalia, who was also fully covered. Her look caused lots of confusion on the internet, wondering how this contributes to the American fashion theme. There have been many speculations about the meaning behind Kim’s outfit. One user had wrote that she can show up on the red carpet fully covered and still gets mass amounts of criticism and hate online. Although there are many theories, Kim has yet to reveal the real reasoning behind her Met Gala look.

German singer Kim Petras showcased her inner horse girl for the night. Kim was dressed in a beautiful floral gown by Collina Strada decorated with a giant horse head. Her hair was braided all the way down to her ankles. The designer of her dress chose the theme of horses because it reminded her of her childhood of living around horses. Kim was accompanied by Hillary Taymour, the creative director for Collina Strada, who was also rocking a horse head. They both praised each other while walking the red carpet and strutted down the carpet as if they were on a runway. Kim described her first time at the Met with FOX 5 News, “I had a great night in my horse outfit!”
