A lot goes on behind the scenes of a play, and a lot goes into the play itself, such as props, music and the acting too! This year, our school did Seussical as our play, and we are going to take a deeper look into what happens behind the scenes!
Alaina Butler teaches all theater classes, such as drama, theater and tech theater. She works with all these kids to get the play finished and looking good. “This is my second year having Ms. Butler as a teacher, and I really like how much effort and care she puts into the programs. You can see from the shows it is evident that she puts in so much effort and how she genuinely cares, which is rare for teachers in our programs,” Chloe Schuhumann, a 10th grader at Charter, stated.
Finding the right people for the play can be hard. “It’s always difficult because you know you will disappoint people, but I’ve always trusted the right cast.” You want to be up on stage and you want to have your big moment to shine, but sometimes it doesn’t go as planned. Schuhumann originally auditioned for Gertrude but ended up getting Bird Girl and Gertrude’s understudy. She still made the best of it and has lots of fun with her roles.
When you are watching a play, there are so many props. There are props on the stage, props that actors can hold and props that even hang from the ceiling. But have you ever wondered who made them? Alaina Butler teaches a class called tech theater. This class is all about the behind the scenes of theater. The students in this class learn how to make props and costumes and learn how lighting and sound work. Butler says, “As a director, I have been preparing since last year, but when it comes to us working as a cast and a crew, we have had since December, so two months.”
