In recent years, our fine arts department has continued to thrive and is now defined by its superior ratings and success. Whether it be the marching band’s straight superiors following their district Music Performance Assessment (MPA) or theater’s upcoming play entitled “Puffs”, the fine arts continue to support each other and make sure to give each other the recognition that they deserve.
While students flock to football and soccer games, theater students look into the audience to find their friends from the choir who came to support them. Junior Madison Kuritz, who is a member of band, colorguard, and theater, knows the work that it takes to create a good product for her audiences. “They really only see the final product and say ‘Oh, that was cool’,” said Kuritz. “But they also don’t understand what really goes into it, like all the effort, time, sweat, and tears.”
Although general audiences may not fully understand the effort it takes to put on a great performance, members of the fine arts do and make sure to help out in any way they can. In 2023, the school established its own chapter of the Tri-M Music Honors Society, where students across the musical fine arts are able to come together, share their love of music, and volunteer for various events throughout the school year to support our band, theater, guitar, and chorus programs. “We always go to each others’ events and support each other no matter what,” said sophomore Tri-M historian Dénaya Richards. “We all have a deep understanding of the fine arts and the hard work that goes into it, so supporting each other means everything.”
Some branches, like the school’s band program, support our middle and high school theater programs every year by arranging dates where band members attend performances together. “[Doing this means] supporting the rest of the fine arts department and embedding in the kids how important it is to support the fine arts and supporting the members that are in both band and theater,” said Band Director David Cardona.
Next time you hear about another success within the fine arts, watch and see how members of different branches interact with each other. You’ll hear dozens of “Congratulations!” and find smiles plastered across their faces. Feel free to take it into your own hands, pull someone aside, and let them know that you support them just like their fellow fine arts members do.
